Party games to play with one phone and no internet (road trips, cabins, camping)
With one phone and no internet, the easiest group games are team word games: describe-the-word (one player describes, the team guesses against a timer), charades, one-word-clue games and hot-potato rounds where the phone passes around. You can play all of them with paper slips and a timer, or with an app that works offline. The key step is testing that app in Airplane Mode before you lose signal.
Games that need nothing but a phone timer
These work anywhere, even with a phone that has no apps installed.
Describe-the-word. Write words on paper slips. One player describes a word without saying it; their team guesses before the timer ends. Teams take turns.
Charades. Same idea, but no talking: act the word out.
One-word clues. The describer can give only one word per clue. Harder and very funny with adults.
Hot potato. Everyone in a circle, one bowl of words, a timer set to a random length. Describe, pass the bowl on each correct guess. Whoever holds the bowl when time runs out loses the round.
Twenty questions. No props at all: one player thinks of something, others ask yes or no questions.
How to check a party app really works offline
Many apps say "offline" but need signal for some parts, such as loading decks or showing ads. At home:
- Open the app once while online so first-run setup and any downloads finish.
- Turn on Airplane Mode.
- Force-close the app, then open it again.
- Start a full game: set up teams, play a round, check scoring.
- Open each deck or pack you plan to use.
If anything fails, download the content while online or choose another app.
Apps that list offline play
These word-game apps say on their store pages that they work offline:
- Alias - Team Word Challenge: explain words under a timer with host-set points, penalties and skips (App Store)
- Keyword - Password Party: one-word clues, with a hot-potato mode, online or fully offline (App Store)
- Hot Phrase: hot-potato team rounds; works offline except its online mode (App Store)
Store pages change, so run the Airplane Mode test anyway.
Tips for road trips and cabins
- In the car: the driver should not play. Let passengers in the back describe and the front passenger keep score.
- Charge first: party games keep the screen on. Bring a cable or power bank.
- Keep volume low at night in shared cabins or campsites.
- Mix teams by age so younger players are not always on the losing side. Our guide to playing describe-the-word with kids and adults has house rules for that.
- Set a round limit so the game ends while everyone is still having fun.
Where Cluekin fits
Cluekin is a describe-the-word team game for parties and family game nights, made by ODEL, that plays offline on one phone:
- Offline play with no account; scores and settings stay on the device
- 2 to 6 teams, timed rounds and built-in scoring
- Adjustable timers, pass limits and scoring
- Family and party modes, plus optional packs including a Child Cards Pack
- iOS and Android, in eight languages
Note: internet is needed to load prices and to purchase or restore card packs, so buy any packs you want before the trip. Free players may see ads between completed matches, never during a timed turn; the one-time Complete Pack removes ads and unlocks all current and future standard packs. Single packs are $0.99 each (US App Store, Nov 2026). Cluekin is newer and has few ratings.
