How to play bedtime stories with the screen off on iPhone
To play a bedtime story with the screen off on iPhone, start the story, press the side button to lock the phone, and check that the audio keeps playing. Then set a Clock timer with When Timer Ends > Stop Playing so the story stops by itself, and turn on Do Not Disturb or a Sleep Focus so no notification lights up the room. Put the phone face down, out of reach. That is all you need for screen-free listening.
This is a practical setup guide, not medical advice about sleep.
1. Check that the app keeps playing when locked
Most audio and podcast apps keep playing after you lock the screen, but not every app does. Test it once in the daytime:
- Start a story.
- Press the side button to lock the iPhone.
- Wait a minute. If the audio stops, the app needs the screen on; look for a different app or a setting inside it.
You can also control playback from the Lock Screen without unlocking the phone.
2. Set a timer that stops the story
The iPhone Clock app can stop whatever is playing when a timer ends:
- Open Clock and tap Timers.
- Set the length, for example 20 minutes.
- Tap When Timer Ends and choose Stop Playing at the bottom of the list.
- Tap Start.
When the timer runs out, playback stops quietly instead of ringing. Tom's Guide walks through the same steps in How to stop playback when a timer ends on iPhone. Remember to switch the timer sound back later if you use timers for other things.
3. Silence notifications
A message lighting up the screen at bedtime undoes the point of audio-only. Before the story:
- Turn on Do Not Disturb or a Sleep Focus from Control Center, or
- Put the phone face down on a soft surface
If you use the phone for the story every night, set a Focus schedule so it turns on automatically.
4. Keep the phone out of your child's hands
An audio story works best when the device is not reachable. Place it on a shelf or dresser. If your child must hold a device, for example an old iPhone used as a story player, lock it to one app with Guided Access so they cannot switch to videos or games. Apple's guide: Use Guided Access on iPhone or iPad.
5. Use a speaker if you prefer
A Bluetooth speaker in the bedroom lets you keep the phone in another room. Pair it once, start the story, then leave the phone outside. Keep the volume low.
6. Prepare the story before bedtime
Choose the story in the daytime or during bath time so you are not scrolling in the dark. Many story apps and podcast apps let you download episodes in advance, which also avoids buffering on weak Wi-Fi.
Free options that work this way
- Podcast apps such as Apple Podcasts play with the screen locked. Storynory publishes free audio fairy tales and myths as a podcast.
