# How to get through a vape craving: what to do in the next few minutes

> Practical steps for adults when an urge to vape hits: change what you are doing, move, breathe, reach out, then note the trigger so the next one is easier.

When a vape craving hits, stop what you are doing and switch to something different for a few minutes: walk, climb some stairs, breathe slowly, text someone, or play a quick game. Cravings are common but temporary, and Smokefree.gov notes they fade the longer you stay quit ([Dealing With Vape Cravings](https://smokefree.gov/quit-vaping-resources/dealing-with-vape-cravings)). Afterwards, write down what set it off. That note is what makes the next craving easier to see coming.

> This is habit support for adults, not medical advice. If you want help with nicotine withdrawal, including nicotine replacement or other medicines, talk to a doctor, pharmacist or a quitline. In the U.S. you can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free support.

## In the moment: pick one action

You do not need all of these. Choose the one that fits where you are and do it straight away.

1. **Change what you are doing.** Get up, change rooms, put the phone down if scrolling set it off. Smokefree.gov's first advice is to stop and do something different.
2. **Move for two minutes.** A quick walk, a few flights of stairs, push-ups against a wall.
3. **Breathe slowly.** In through your nose, out slowly through your mouth, about ten times. It gives your hands and attention a job.
4. **Reach out.** Text or call someone who knows you are quitting. "Craving, talk me out of it" is enough.
5. **Distract your hands and mouth.** A glass of water, something crunchy, chewing gum.
6. **Play a short game.** A puzzle on your phone can carry you past the peak.
7. **Read your reasons.** Look at the reasons you wrote when you decided to quit.

## Have the plan ready before the craving

Cravings are harder to handle when you have to decide what to do in the middle of one. Write a short "craving plan" now: your first-choice action, a backup, and one person to text. Keep it somewhere you will see it, such as a note on your phone's Home Screen or in your quit app. If you do not have a quit plan yet, our guide on [making a plan to quit vaping](/blog/make-a-plan-to-quit-vaping) walks through one.

## Remove easy access

Many cravings turn into a slip because the vape is within reach. Get rid of devices, pods and e-liquid, and avoid buying "just one for emergencies". Distance buys time, and time is what a craving runs out of.

## After the craving: note what set it off

Right after, write three things:

- **When and where:** "Tuesday, 15:30, at my desk"
- **What was happening:** "after a stressful call", "with friends who vape", "after coffee"
- **How you felt:** stressed, bored, tired, happy

After a week or two, patterns appear: the same time of day, the same people, the same mood. Smokefree.gov lists common triggers such as seeing someone vape, drinking alcohol, being on your phone, and stress ([Know Your Vaping Triggers](https://smokefree.gov/quit-vaping-resources/know-your-vaping-triggers)). Once you know yours, you can plan around them: a different route, a new after-coffee habit, a word with friends.

## If you slip

A slip is not the end of a quit attempt. Smokefree.gov suggests treating it as a temporary setback, thinking about why it happened and how to prevent it next time, and getting back on track with your reasons in mind. Note the trigger like any other craving and carry on from your next decision.

## Where an app can help

You can do all of the above with a paper notebook. An app puts the craving plan and the log in your pocket.

[Unvay](/app/vapeless) is a quit app for adults that covers vapes, cigarettes and other nicotine products:

1. **Set up a personal quit plan** for what you use. You can edit it later.
2. **When an urge hits, open the craving rescue tools** and choose one small action to get through it.
3. **Log the urge, your mood and the trigger** afterwards. Over time the log shows which times, places or moods come before cravings.
4. **Watch your streak.** A visual streak and progress view, plus optional Home Screen widgets, keep the nicotine-free days visible.

Unvay needs no account; your plan, journal and craving entries are stored on your device. Reminders are optional and scheduled locally. It is free to download, but full access needs an Unvay Plus subscription after a 3-day trial for eligible users. It works on iPhone and Android, in English.
