How to choose a coloring app for a toddler or young child (ages 2 to 8)

· By Oguz Delioglu, founder of ODEL

To choose a coloring app for a young child, match the controls to their age first: a 2 to 4 year old needs big targets, tap-to-fill and no reading, while a 5 to 8 year old wants finer tools like a pencil, zoom and color by number. Then check three practical things before you hand it over: whether ads or locked items appear in the child's space, how the app charges, and whether it works offline. Ten minutes of playing it yourself answers all of this.

Step 1: Match the controls to your child's age

Children's hands and patience change a lot between 2 and 8.

Ages 2 to 4 usually do best with:

  • Tap-to-fill: one touch colors a whole area, so the picture looks finished even with imprecise fingers
  • Big targets and forgiving taps, so a near miss still works
  • No text: menus and instructions shown with pictures or sound
  • Short pictures: a few large areas rather than dozens of tiny ones

Ages 5 to 8 usually want:

  • A free pencil to draw their own lines
  • An eraser and zoom for small details
  • Color by number or more detailed pages for a challenge

If an app only does one of these, it may be outgrown quickly or be frustrating at the start.

Step 2: Check what happens when your child taps everything

Toddlers tap whatever is on screen. Play the app the way they would and note:

  • Do ads appear between pages?
  • Are locked pages mixed in with free ones, so your child keeps hitting a purchase screen?
  • Is there a parental gate, a question or gesture an adult must complete, before purchases, links and settings?

This matters even in apps you have paid for. One Paint My Cat store review, for example, says an update added subscription-locked activities to an app the family had already bought, and that locked items were easy for children to tap (App Store).

You can block in-app purchases on an iPhone or iPad with Screen Time; Apple explains how in Use Screen Time to turn off in-app purchases.

Step 3: Understand how the app charges

Coloring apps use very different models:

  • Free with no purchases, sometimes supported by the developer's other apps
  • Free pages plus paid packs or a one-time full-version unlock
  • Subscriptions, weekly, monthly or yearly
  • Time-limited free play, where non-subscribers get a few minutes a day

None is wrong, but know which one you are choosing. Read the in-app purchase list on the store page before you install, and set a reminder before any free trial ends.

Step 4: Test it offline

Coloring is a favorite for car rides and flights. Put the device in Airplane Mode at home and open the app. If pictures fail to load or the app asks you to connect, you will want to know before you leave. We cover travel prep in How to set up kids coloring for a road trip or flight.

Step 5: Plan for siblings sharing one tablet

If a 3-year-old and a 7-year-old share a tablet, you have two options: install one app for each, or choose one app with separate modes for each age. One app keeps the Home Screen simple; two apps let each child have tools that fit them.

Paper still counts

A digital coloring app is not better than crayons and paper. Paper is cheaper, needs no battery and lets children feel pressure and texture. Many families use both: paper at home, an app for travel and waiting rooms.

Where Painto fits

Painto is a coloring app for ages 2 to 8 with both age groups in one app:

  • Ages 2 to 4: big targets, forgiving taps and tap-to-fill, with no reading needed
  • Ages 5 to 8: a color-by-number mode and richer detail, plus a free pencil, eraser and zoom
  • 3D coloring: children paint a real 3D character, spin it around and watch it do a happy dance when finished
  • 2D coloring book for regular pages

Painto works fully offline, has no ads and no third-party trackers, and a parental gate protects every purchase, link and setting. It is free to download, with a Weekly plan ($6.99), a Yearly plan ($24.99) or a one-time Lifetime purchase ($29.99) for more content (US App Store, Nov 2026). It is new, iPhone and iPad only, and English only.
