How to free up iPhone storage without deleting your photos

· By Oguz Delioglu, founder of ODEL

You can free up a lot of iPhone storage without losing a single photo you care about. Start with Settings, General, iPhone Storage to see what is actually using the space, offload apps you rarely use, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage if you use iCloud Photos, compress your largest videos, and then remove only the copies you never wanted: duplicates, near-identical shots and old screenshots. Work through the steps in this order, because the first ones cost nothing and need no app.

1. See what is using the space

Open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage. You get a bar chart by category, a list of apps sorted by size and recommendations at the top (Apple Support). If Photos is not near the top, deleting photos would not have helped much anyway; look at the biggest apps and messages first.

2. Offload apps you rarely use

In the same screen, iOS may suggest offloading unused apps. Offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data, so reinstalling it brings everything back (Apple Support). This is the safest space you will ever recover.

3. Let iCloud keep the full-resolution originals

If you use iCloud Photos, go to Settings, tap your name, iCloud, Photos, and choose Optimize iPhone Storage. Full-resolution photos and videos stay in iCloud, and the iPhone keeps space-saving versions when it runs low (Apple Support). You need enough iCloud storage for your library, which may mean a paid iCloud plan.

4. Compress your largest videos

Videos are usually the biggest files on a phone. A few long 4K clips can take more space than thousands of photos. Compressing them keeps the moment while cutting the file size.

Things to know before you compress:

  • Quality drops a little. Fine detail and sharp motion suffer most. For family clips viewed on a phone this is rarely noticeable; for footage you plan to edit, keep the original somewhere else first.
  • Check the result before deleting the original. Play the compressed version in full.
  • Start with the biggest files. Compressing a few large videos frees more than many small ones.

CleanMasterX compresses videos and helps you review large media, so you can recover space while keeping the clips. Clever Cleaner and CleanMy Phone also offer video compression (see Cleanup app alternatives).

5. Remove copies you never meant to keep

This is not deleting your photos; it is deleting extras.

  • Exact duplicates: in Photos, open the Duplicates album under Utilities and merge the sets. iOS keeps the higher-quality version. The album appears on iOS 16 and later once Photos has found duplicates (How-To Geek). Our guide on deleting duplicate photos without an app has the full steps.
  • Near-identical shots: bursts and five tries at the same group photo. Keep the best one or two.
  • Old screenshots: directions, codes and receipts you no longer need. Photos has a Screenshots album under Media Types.

CleanMasterX groups similar photos and screenshots so you can pick what to keep; nothing is deleted automatically, and you confirm every change. Deleted items in Photos sit in Recently Deleted for a while, so empty that album when you are sure.

6. Move private photos out of the main library

If some photos are in your camera roll only because you have nowhere else to put them, a vault keeps them out of the way. CleanMasterX has a private photo and contact vault protected with device authentication. Its backups are device-local with no cloud recovery, so keep your own backup of anything important.

What does not work

Ignore apps that promise to "clear system cache" or "boost RAM". iOS manages its own caches and memory, and no App Store app can clear them. CleanMasterX's cache tool removes only the app's own disposable files. The space you recover comes from your own photos, videos and apps.

Also watch the billing. Many cleaner apps are sold weekly after a short trial, and deleting an app does not cancel its subscription; cancel in your Apple account's Subscriptions settings. CleanMasterX has no weekly plan: Premium is $4.99 a month, $29.90 a year or $89.99 once for lifetime access (US App Store, Nov 2026), and free use has a daily swipe limit.
