# How to delete duplicate photos on iPhone without downloading an app

> Use the built-in Duplicates album in Photos to merge copies on iPhone, fix it when the album does not show up, and know when a cleaner app helps with similar shots.

You do not need an app to delete duplicate photos on iPhone. On iOS 16 and later, open **Photos**, scroll to **Utilities**, tap **Duplicates**, and merge each set, or tap **Select**, **Select All** and **Merge** to do them all at once. iOS keeps the higher-quality version of each set ([How-To Geek](https://www.howtogeek.com/836975/how-to-remove-duplicate-photos-and-videos-on-iphone-without-an-app/)). A cleaner app is only worth it when your problem is similar shots rather than exact copies.

## Step by step

1. **Check your iOS version.** Go to **Settings**, **General**, **About**. Duplicate detection arrived with iOS 16.
2. **Open Photos and find Utilities.** On the main Photos screen, scroll down to the Utilities collection (on older iOS versions it is under the Albums tab).
3. **Tap Duplicates.** Each row shows a set of copies with their file sizes.
4. **Merge one set** by tapping **Merge** next to it and confirming, or **merge everything** with **Select**, **Select All**, **Merge**.
5. **Empty Recently Deleted when you are sure.** Space is fully freed only after removed items leave Recently Deleted. You can do it from the Recently Deleted album under Utilities.

Apple documents the same feature for Photos on Mac, where Duplicates also sits under Utilities in the sidebar ([Apple Support](https://support.apple.com/guide/photos/pht5a3157c1d/mac)).

## If the Duplicates album is missing

The Duplicates album only appears after Photos has found duplicates ([How-To Geek](https://www.howtogeek.com/836975/how-to-remove-duplicate-photos-and-videos-on-iphone-without-an-app/)). If you do not see it:

- **Give it time.** After updating iOS or importing a large batch, detection can take hours or days.
- **Lock the iPhone and plug it in overnight.** Photos does this kind of analysis while the phone is locked and charging.
- **Accept that you may have none.** If the album never appears, Photos has not found exact copies. What looks like duplicates may be similar shots, which this tool does not target.

Some people also see an error saying duplicates cannot be merged at the moment ([Apple Community](https://discussions-kr-prz.apple.com/thread/254218617)). If that happens, try merging a single set instead of Select All, or try again later.

## Duplicates vs similar photos

This is where most confusion comes from:

- **Duplicates** are the same image saved twice, for example from a shared album, a messaging app or an import.
- **Similar photos** are separate shots: a burst, five takes of a group photo, the same sunset from slightly different angles.

The Duplicates album handles the first group. For the second, you can do it by hand: open a burst, tap **Select**, keep your favourite, and delete the rest. For a big library that is slow.

## Where a cleaner app fits

A cleaner app is useful when you have hundreds of similar shots and old screenshots spread across years. [CleanMasterX](/app/cleanmasterx) groups similar photos and screenshots so you can review each group and choose what to keep; nothing is deleted automatically. It also compresses videos, which often frees more space than removing photos. Photo access is optional and limited-library access is supported, so you can choose which photos it sees.

Free use has a daily swipe limit. Premium is monthly, yearly or a one-time lifetime purchase, with no weekly plan. If you want to compare it with free and paid options, see [CleanMasterX vs Apple's Duplicates album](/compare/cleanmasterx-vs-apple-photos-duplicates) and [CleanMasterX vs Clever Cleaner](/compare/cleanmasterx-vs-clever-cleaner).

## A simple order that works

1. Merge exact duplicates in Photos. It is free.
2. Delete old screenshots from the Screenshots album under Media Types.
3. Go through bursts and similar shots, by hand or with an app.
4. Compress or offload the largest videos.
5. Empty Recently Deleted.
